Clean streets, and pictures to prove it

We know Affiliated Computer Services for its data processing and call centers that employ more than 3,000 in Central and Eastern Kentucky.

In Chicago, ACS will soon be known to motorists for something else: Law enforcement.

The Texas company just signed a $7 million contract to install cameras on Chicago street sweepers to record the license numbers of illegally parked cars.

“As the sweeper moves down the street, the automated system takes pictures of the violating vehicles, transmits images and data for image verification, and interfaces with the Chicago Department of Revenue to mail violation notices,” ACS says.

Faster than they can say “No parking zone,” Chicago drivers have got a ticket or a summons in their mailboxes.

ACS says this is “the world’s first application” of law-enforcement cameras on street sweepers.
One thing is for sure, Chicago drivers will never again view street sweeping as a harmless public service.
